Pura · Bio-based material solutions

Bio-based leather alternatives are failing. Not in the lab — at the bridge between innovation and industrial adoption.

Pura builds that bridge.

Application-specific bio-based material solutions for industrial buyers in automotive, footwear, furniture, and fashion. Starting with your requirements, not our spec sheet.

01 — The market & the pressure

A $400 billion market is being forced to change. The regulation is already in force.

The global leather goods market is worth over $400 billion. Every major automotive, footwear, and fashion brand has an active brief to replace animal leather and PU synthetics. The bio-based alternative segment is growing at 10.8% CAGR — projected to reach $27.8 billion by 2034.

This is not trend-driven demand. It is regulation-driven demand with fixed deadlines.

ESPR

In force since July 2024 — mandatory circularity & chemical transparency

EU ELV Regulation

Agreed December 2025 — bio-based content mandated in new vehicles

EU Digital Product Passport

Mandatory from 2026 — full material traceability required

India-EU FTA

Concluded January 2026 — zero tariffs on Indian leather into the EU

The market is large. The regulation is in force. The deadlines are fixed. What has been missing is a bio-based material solution that actually works at industrial scale.

02 — Why bio-based is failing

Most bio-based leather alternatives never reach industrial scale. The insolvency filings explain why.

The diagnosis is consistent: wrong price point, performance gaps at scale, industrial switching costs underestimated. The structural cause is the same in every case — science first, market second.Capital raised on material stories. Commercial infrastructure never built.

The gap between "brands love this material" and "industrial buyers have budgeted to purchase it at volume" is where bio-based leather companies go to die.

Pura is built differently. We start with the market — the industrial buyer, the application, the performance requirement, the price point. The material science happens. The commercial infrastructure is built first, not last.

03 — What we do

We develop application-specific bio-based material solutions for industrial buyers.

We do not just supply a material. We take bio-based material innovation and make it work inside real industrial systems — handling the application development, the performance validation, the supply chain integration, and the commercial pathway.

We start with your requirements. Every engagement begins the same way: tell us your target application, your performance specifications, your target price point, and your volume. We assess honestly what is achievable today, what development work is required to meet your specific needs, and what the timeline looks like.

  • If our current material meets your requirements as-is, we move quickly.
  • If it requires adaptation, we tell you what is involved.
  • If we cannot meet your requirements today, we say so — and tell you what would need to change.

That discipline is what separates Pura from every bio-based materials company that came before us.

The material science happens. We make sure it also ships.

04 — The material

A plant-based, plastic-free leather alternative. Built to perform.

Our material is a fully bio-based leather alternative — made from plant-based cellulose and bio-based binders, with no polyurethane, no PVC, and no synthetic polymers at any stage. When the product reaches end of life, the material returns to the earth completely. No microplastics. No synthetic residue.

It looks and feels like leather. It performs like leather. It is not leather.

05 — How we work

We start with your requirements. Not our spec sheet.

Every application is different. Automotive seat covers have different flex, abrasion, and VOC requirements than footwear uppers. Furniture upholstery has different durability and flame requirements than fashion accessories.

Tell us what you need. We will tell you honestly what we can do.

We work with industrial buyers to understand the full picture — performance specifications, manufacturing constraints, supply chain requirements, target price, and volume. We then develop, validate, and supply a material solution configured to those requirements. We manage the supply chain. We support manufacturing integration. You get a material that works in your specific process — not a sample that works in a lab.

This is not how most bio-based material companies work. It is exactly why most of them have failed.

06 — Applications

India-EU FTA · Zero duty

08 — Why India

Where the FTA opens the door and EU regulation makes bio-based materials essential.

The India-EU FTA, concluded 27 January 2026, eliminates tariffs on Indian leather and footwear exports into the EU — duties currently up to 17%. India's $4B+ leather export sector gains its most favourable EU market access in history. And simultaneously faces its most demanding EU sustainability compliance requirements ever.

Zero-duty access into Europe means nothing if the material fails ESPR, EU DPP, or ELV requirements. Indian manufacturers who cannot demonstrate material compliance risk losing the very market access the FTA just opened.

The FTA opens the door. Pura makes sure Indian manufacturers can walk through it.

09 — How to work with us

Start with your requirements. We will start there too.

We work with automotive manufacturers, footwear brands, furniture companies, and fashion labels who have an active requirement to replace PU or PVC leather in their supply chain.

The conversation starts with your specifications — not a product catalogue. Tell us your target application, your performance requirements, your target price, and the volume you need. We will respond with an honest assessment of what is achievable, what development work is involved, and what the timeline looks like.

If you are navigating ESPR, EU DPP, ELV, or ESG sourcing requirements and need a bio-based alternative that is commercially ready — reach out.
